A
trip to the Eiteljorg Museum includes terrific resources, wonderful
guides and links to the IDOE Academic Standards. Schedule your
class for a guided or teacher-guided visit. Plan to bring one
adult for every 10 students. (Note: K-2nd grade classes must
have two adults per 10 students and, for your safety and the
security of the museum’s collections, cannot be self-guided.)
There is no minimum school group size for discounted admission
and the student fee is extended to full-time adult students!
Skilled volunteers lead the one-hour tours. Tours are interactive
and hands-on experiences are included as often as possible.
Our guides do want to know in advance your goals for the visit,
so please tell us where you are in your curriculum when you
call. If you want to spend additional time in the galleries
after the guided tour please arrange that with our education
coordinator when you call to schedule your visit.

For
scheduled student groups, admission is $3 for each student
and adult escort. For students younger than the third grade,
we require two adult chaperones per 10 children. Otherwise,
one adult per 10 students is required. Reservations must be
made by phone three weeks in advance for guided tours and 10
days in advance for teacher-guided tours at (317) 275-1350,
press one at the prompt. Payment by cash, check, Visa or MasterCard
is due on arrival. Please plan to arrive a few minutes before
the tour time.
TCU Transportation Grants are available for the 2007-2008
school year. Call (317) 275-1350 and press one at the prompt
to learn more.

The Eiteljorg Museum is able to provide a
sack lunch area. Use of this space must be scheduled along
with your visit. The sack lunch area can seat approximately
60 students at a time.
Here are some options to consider when planning your trip
to the Eiteljorg:

Tour length: one hour
Give students a well-rounded orientation
to the Eiteljorg’s exhibitions and collection highlights.
Appropriate for 3rd grade and older. Please make you group
reservation at least three weeks in advance by calling our
education department at (317) 275-1350, and press 1 at the
prompt.

Tour length: one hour
Visit all of the Native American galleries,
but take more time to focus in Mihtohseenionki
(The People’s Place), where we concentrate
on the art, history and cultures of the Indiana region. Ask
for a free Mihtohseenionki poster to take back to the classroom.
Download the “Mihtohseenionki Teachers’ Resource
Guide” for free. It provides valuable information
to help you make the most of this tour.

Guides
will emphasize art, history and cultures while interpreting
the Native American collections. For grades three, four, five
and eight, the tour is IDOE Academic Standards-based related
to the visual arts, language arts and social studies standards.
Older students and adults will enjoy this tour, too. See what
Native cultures are represented inside the museum here: tribes'
and nations' artifacts.

Student groups who visit the museum on their
own but schedule at least three weeks in advance are eligible
for the group tour rate. Student groups under 18 years of
age are required to have one adult supervisor (teacher) for
each 10 students and must stay together under adult supervision.
We’re
here to help if you want to plan your own experience. We do
need to know if you plan on drawing in the galleries. Please
note that ink pens are not allowed. Please call for a scheduled
time to take advantage of group rates. Scheduled full-time
students, including adults, can receive the student discount.

When planning a visit for your class, consider
taking advantage of one of the many special exhibitions that
we have to offer. We have guides who can focus on the special
exhibitions or schedule the one-hour tour time to cover portions
of the special exhibitions as well as the museum’s traditional
fine art collections.
To
get more information about a tour, or to schedule a visit,
please call our education department at (317) 275-1350, and
press 1 at the prompt. Be ready to tell us the number of students,
date(s) to consider, contact information and anything that
we can pass along to the museum guides.

Schedule a cultural art experience for your
students. Students have an opportunity to learn while creating
artwork inspired by a museum theme in the museum’s art
studios. Seasonal programs, such as Fiesta! in December, are
also held in the studios. These experiences can be arranged
for kindergarten through adult students. Combination tour
and studio programs are also available. Studio programs are
limited to one classroom group, 30 students maximum. Below
are some suggested studio programs:
-
Where’d They Get the Beads?
This combination tour and studio experience is recommended
for those students learning about Early Native American cultures
and trade (This program fits just right with the fifth-grade
social studies and other IDOE Academic Standards.) Students
will make beads in the studio portion. The bead-making studio
is limited to one class, 30 students or less, each hour.
Tour and studio experience is 90 minutes. $4 per participant.

We want to help make your school visit meaningful
and become your resource for information about the West and
Native Americans. Tell us how you plan to connect your curriculum
to your visit. Let us know if you’re searching for resources,
and we will direct you to materials developed for past exhibitions
and programs.
